NORTH EAST BUSINESS SPOTS CACTUS POTENTIAL
A Newcastle businessman has joined forces with a co-operative group of cactus growers to flush out a potentially lucrative new business opportunity.
John Grimmett, MD of Premier Lifestyles, based in Heaton, and the Oro Verde® farmers of northern Mexico, are bringing fine powder 100% organic nopal to the UK with a simple message - go natural for better health.
Grown in the country’s high altitude volcanic mountains, nopal comes from the pad of the prickly pear cactus and is a completely natural whole food, high in fibre. Taken daily as part of a healthy diet John has discovered that nopal can not only provide much needed relief to our over-worked, over indulged digestive systems, it also packs a serious wellbeing punch.
The UK spends over £360 million on health supplements every year with 40% of us taking supplement pills daily to get that elusive state of ‘wellbeing’. John is keen to get into the market. “But we are not competing as a health supplement, we are offering a natural whole food - a much gentler and more effective approach to long-term good health.”
Nopal is believed to have been valued as a prize food for some 12,000 years. It is used as a staple food by locals and is renowned for its unique combination of dietary fibres, vitamins and minerals.
John again, “We revere the achievements of ancient Greece and Rome, well this is an outstanding ancient remedy from South America with a bang up to date application. Nopal - combined with other whole foods - is excellent for sustained health.
He continued. “This natural, 100% organic food is proven to cleanse the colon and increase the efficiency of the digestive system. It can also improve overall wellbeing and helps to revitalise and strengthen the whole body, as well as controlling a wide range of circulation, heart and digestive disorders.”
John is passionate about this product which he first came across when visiting his brother, who lives in Mexico. “It is well documented that nations who eat less processed food have a lower incidence of bowel cancer. I want to educate people in this country about better gut health and what nopal - if taken daily - can do for them.”
The three largest producing nopal states all have altitudes exceeding 2000m. Oro Verde® comes from these high altitude, volcanic fields, situated on a steep pine-forested slopes at 2400m - the ideal growing conditions for premium organic nopal.
Growers cut the nopal pads from the stems, then wash, slice, solar hydrate and sterilize them before grinding them down into fine powder form and packing them into 335g sealed bags for John to market in the UK.
John is selling these bags online - www.nopallife.com . A month’s supply is £19.90 (inclusive of delivery).
Complementary therapist Angela Jones who runs a clinic in Gateshead, is already recommending the product to clients with a range of medical issues. She says, “Organic nopal is incredibly rich in fibre and will gently and naturally aid the body in getting rid of waste, which is essential to wellbeing. But it also has extra vitamins and minerals - like iron. Even people with healthy diets are often deficient in iron. It is a fantastic food.”
John has already started selling the product and has had interest expressed from a well known high street health retailer. He expects more. “We are confident that there is enough interest in natural plant-based foods to make Oro Verde® a big success.”

Notes to editors
The UK’s latest National Diet and Health Survey states that one third of men and half of women between 19 and 64 years consume less than 12 g of fibre per day. The Dietary Recommended Value is 18 g per day. Therefore the population as a whole is a long way from achieving the fibre intake that is optimum for health.
