GET SCHOOLED IN STOOLS - FOCUS ON FIBRE
According to recent research* by Oro Verde® Organic Nopal - the super nutritious pad of the prickly pear cactus - one in three of us have never examined our stools. This means we are missing out on vital signs of health and vitality.
The first ever Poo Poll, commissioned by Oro Verde® to better understand the British attitude to stools and ‘going to the loo’ in general, also revealed that less than one in four of us (21%) had ever had a stool ‘examined’ by someone else and of those who did take a peek at their own (67%), many had little idea what to look for.
According to the Bristol Stool Chart, developed by Dr K Hering at the University of Bristol and first published in 1990, there are seven types of stool as it appears in a toilet.
The form of the stool depends on the time it spends in the colon. Type 1 and 2 indicate constipation, types 3 and 4 are usually the most comfortable to pass, types 5 & 6 tend to be associated with urgency and type 7 is diarrhoea.
Complementary health therapist Angela Jones, who is recommending Oro Verde® to a number of clients, commented: “We only tend to talk about poo when we are in crisis, eg at extreme ends of the stool chart scale. Then we might take action.
“But the underlying problem is that most of us have a highly processed diet and just do not eat enough fibre to give us consistent ‘comfortable to pass’ types 3 & 4 stools. The recommended daily amount of fibre for adults between 19 and 64 is 18g a day - we eat less than 12g - a long way from what health professionals tell us is optimum for health**.”
“The recommended daily intake of Oro Verde® Organic Nopal is 15g - or three 5g teaspoons. Of that almost 7g is fibre. If you combine that with a diet rich in other sources of fibre like fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, people can get much closer to the 18g with minimum effort.”
Almost 62% of the respondents in the ‘poo poll’ said that if they knew bacteria left behind in the colon - at its most serious - could result in bowel cancer - they would think again about what they were eating.
Angela again, “If we could get back to a diet rich in fibre we would give ourselves the best possible chance of all round good health.
