BRITS WAKE UP TO COLON HEALTH
The majority of us over-indulge at Christmas but in a new survey released today - dubbed the ultimate poo poll - 54% said they were worried about the effects on their digestive system.
According to research from Oro Verde® Organic Nopal - a new natural whole food from Mexico, which smoothes waste through the system and is packed with nutrients - the nation expected to consume the usual mountain of food and drink, but recognised there would be trouble ahead.
The One Poll survey among 2700 men and women from across the UK* revealed that during the festive period, almost half of us noticed a difference in the digestive process, 40% suffered indigestion and 35% got diarrhoea. But only one in four of the respondents said it put a dampener on festivities.
“It is interesting to note that people have started to be aware of what is going on, although not many let it interrupt the celebrations. By the looks of this survey they battle on regardless,” said Complementary Health Therapist Angela Jones. “It really is war on the digestive system this time of year.”
Almost 62% of respondents said that if they knew bacteria in the colon could - at its most serious - result in bowel cancer and other stomach ailments - they would change the way they think about their diet.
70% of people said they were most likely to deal with digestive problems when they happened, rather than taking any preventative steps in advance. But 64% did think bowel health was as important as keeping other parts of the body healthy, like the heart.
Angela again, “Let the message for 2008 be about colon health - what do you know about it and do you know how you can better manage the process of waste through the body.”
“Organic Nopal is incredibly rich in fibre and will gently and naturally aid the body in getting rid of waste with the added value that it contains vitamins and minerals - like iron, even people with healthy diets are often deficient in iron.”
The survey also highlighted the fact that when it comes to ‘toilet talk’ we are split in our views. Almost half of us are happy to tackle the subject while the other half keep it strictly taboo. Women were thought to be more knowledgeable on toilet-related matters (79%) and it was women who did something about family digestive problems (82%).
79% said they had never had their poo examined by anyone else and only 67% of respondents had looked at their stools, leaving 33% who do not look as a rule.
Just under 77% said that irregular bowel movements would affect their daily routine. While 67% did link going to the loo normally with general well-being and were worried about changes. Over 80% consider digestion as an important factor for general health.
Angela again; “Getting waste efficiently out of the body is very important to all-round wellbeing and it is a pleasant surprise to know that people do consider it important - now we need to get them to do something about it.”
The survey upheld the old myth of men taking refuge for long periods in the loo with their favourite reading matter. 71% thought men were keener on spending more time in the loo than women and according to the ‘poo poll’, 67% of women remain mystified as to its appeal. The most popular read ‘on the job’ for men was a newspaper while for women most just read the shampoo and bubble bath bottles nearby. “I can’t think of a more unpleasant environment to read in,” said one female respondent.
Public toilets were deemed not condusive to ‘happy going’ by 59% of the respondents and an overwhelming 94% found it much more relaxing in the ‘throne room’ at home.
